WIDENING CIRCLES

"I live my life in widening circles-that reach out across the world. I may not ever complete the last one, but I give myself to it.

I circle around God, that primordial tower. I have been circling for thousands of years, and still don't know: am I a falcon, a storm, or a great song? (or a bouvier)"

Rainer Maria Rilke

GOODNESS

Will reign in the world not when it triumphs over evil, but when our love of goodness ceases to express itself in terms of the triumph over evil. Peace, if it comes, will not be made by people who have rendered themselves into saints, but by people who have humbly accepted their condition as sinners. It was in fact a saint…Saint Theresa of Lisieux who expressed what it takes to allow the spirit of peace to reside in our hearts. “If you are willing to serenely bear the trial of being displeasing to yourself, then you will be for Jesus a peaceful place of shelter.”

‘Integrating ourselves is an essential step in bringing about the harmonious integration of humankind. The larger the gap in our relationship with ourselves, the shakier the foundation on which we can build bridges to other people.”

The basis of human bonds is trust, and we can build trust with others only to the extent that we confront the truth in relation to ourselves.”

(Andrew Bard Schmookler…”Out of Weakness…Healing the Wounds That Drive Us to War”)

HOPE

“Is a state of mind, not of the world?  It is a dimension of the soul, and is not essentially dependent on some particular observation of the world or estimate of the situation. It is the ability to work for something because it is good not just because it stands a chance to succeed.

Vaclav Havel

“We live in a world where it often seems that our fears outweigh our hope that things can get better. And, yes, there are many concerns worth worrying about. Yet, rather than running from the problems we must embrace a powerful tool that will help us overcome what is wrong_ INSPIRATION.  It is a force that can truly change the world.

When we motivate we serve ourselves first, when we inspire we serve others first.”

Benjamin Zander

“For love of domination we must substitute equality; for love of victory we must substitute justice; for brutality we must substitute intelligence; for competition we must substitute cooperation.

We must learn to think of the human race as one family.”

Bertrand Russell…was one of the greatest philosophers of the twentieth        century; he was an active pacifist who spent considerable energy working for world peace, especially in his eighties and nineties. Although he believed that the intellect maintained his sanity, he considered the emotions and passions fundamental in human life.

ENCHANTMENT

1% dove logo“Is an ascendancy of the soul, a condition that allows us to connect, for the most part lovingly and intimately, with the world we inhabit and the people who make up our families and communities? Without enchantment we try rationally to forge those intimacies and make those connections, but our efforts are futile. On almost every page of this book I feel as though I have to defend the absurdity of what I’m writing, because the particulars of enchantment are simple in comparison to the complexities of modern life, and because the principles of enchantment are so directly opposed to those of modernism. Enchantment is tinged with play and eros. “

Thomas Moore …The Re-enchantment of Everyday Life

From the pain comes the Dream, From the Dream comes the Vision, From the Vision comes the People, From the People comes the Power, and from this Power comes the Change. Peter Gabriel

IDEAS WHOSE TIME HAD COME

"An invasion of armies can be resisted, but not an idea whose time has come."

Victor Hugo

Did you know that 2 men, a doctor and a stock broker, met by chance in the 1930's and that chance meeting changed millions of lives in a positive way. Neither of these men could get sober alone. They were hopelessly addicted to alcohol; their lives were in chaos, ruin, emotionally, financially, physically and spiritually. Together they came up with an idea, a brilliant concept of a support program that eventually evolved into Alcoholics Anonymous and the 12 steps of recovery, the program enabled them and millions after them to put their lives back together and to directly benefit families, friends, employers, society. In recent years these same 12 steps of recovery are being utilized by many other self help groups eg, oa, na, pa, ga and what is so wonderful to realize is that this spiritually based movement was put into place without self aggrandizement, profit, bureaucracy; for many, many years the idea was frowned upon, even ridiculed by most professionals and their organizations.

MORE IDEAS

In 1960 there was a man in England who was reading about a young student somewhere in Spain or Latin America who had been jailed simply for speaking of his political beliefs. And that man started thinking about perhaps the thousands of other political prisoners in all the countries in the world, disappearing, never to see their loved ones. And so that man had an idea and he told a friend who told a friend and pretty soon Amnesty International was born and eventually more than a million people from all over the world started writing letters (shining a light) to Presidents, Military Dictators to free political prisoners. At one count over 50,000 wrongfully imprisoned people had been set free and countless thousands not jailed because of the watchful eye of AI and the powerful idea of a man in England in 1960 and somehow it doesn't seem to matter that I can not recall his name.

AND EVEN MORE ENERGIES of LOVE

A man I met on my 1% journey in 1993-in Wichita, Kansas told me his story. He was born in India and came to the US to attend college, met his future wife, started a very successful clothing manufacturing business. One day while on a business trip he was flying over a small island and he noticed that 1/2 the island had trees and the other 1/2 had none. The year was 1978 and Balbir was thinking of that island and how close to half the world doesn't have enough food to eat for survival. So he had an idea that he would sell his business and start planting fruit bearing trees in remote villages in India and in Columbia, South America. He had a tremendous struggle with little money and selling his idea that most felt was preposterous. But he kept on raising money the best way he could and now(1993)some 16 years later his organization, "Trees for Life" has world famous people on his board of directors and he has planted more than 14 million trees bearing billions of pounds life sustaining food...The Disney Company is participating in Balbir's idea whose time had come!

THE BOY and THE STARFISH

A writer was walking along a quiet beach lost in his thoughts when he came across a young boy who was picking up a starfish one at a time and throwing them back into the ocean. The problem as this writer saw it was that there were literally thousands of stranded starfish. So he said to the boy, "Excuse me, but what difference does it make for you to do what you are doing....there is no end to them. Without missing a throw the boy replied, "It sure makes a difference to this one." The writer continued on to his ocean view home and tried to pick up on his writing. After a short while he hurried down to the beach and joined the young boy throwing starfish into the sea. (Unknown)

Close your eyes and relax, breathe in deeply for several moments. Picture your heart sitting comfortably on a tiny swing in a bird cage. Notice that your heart has very beautiful small wings like those of a hummingbird. As you look closely, you see the cage door open slowly and your heart flies, almost floating, out of the cage and up and up, soaring higher and higher to the clouds, soft white clouds. Then suddenly you see a sign in beautiful gold letters "WELCOME TO FREEDOM STREET, located in the TOWN of AWAKENING in the state of CONNECTION", AND you know down deep within that somehow there will be less suffering because you let your heart grow wings to fly and allowed the cage to open.

We Burmese believe that those who perform good deeds together will meet again through the cycle of existence, bonded by shared merit. It was good to think that if I am to continue to tread the cycle of existence, I shall be doing so in the company of those who have proved to be the truest of friends and companions.

Boy praying

Lord make me an instrument of Thy peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love,
Where there is injury, pardon,
Where there is doubt, faith,
Where there is despair, hope,
Where there is darkness, light,
Where there is sadness, joy,
Oh, Divine Master, grant that I may not so
Much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood as to understand;
To be loved as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi

Imagine there’s no heaven, it’s easy if you try,
No hell below us, above us only sky.
Imagine all the people living for today.
Imagine there are no countries;
It isn’t hard to do.

Nothing to kill or die for, no religion too.
Imagine all the people living  life in peace,
You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.
I hope some day you will join us,
And the world will live as one.

Imagine no possessions, I wonder if you can.
No need for greed or hunger, a brotherhood of man.
Imagine all the people sharing all the world.
You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.
I hope some day you will join us,
And the world will live as one!

John Lennon

“If you dream it, you can do it!” ....Walt Disney

“The denial of mysticism…is a deep and enduring scandal that is no longer tolerable. The reason human civilization is tired, depressed, unimaginative in dealing with unemployment, pollution, youth, despair, injustice and inequality is that we” do not even know who we are” as Hildegard of Bingen put it. We are out of touch with our true selves as Alice Miller puts it. A civilization that denies the mystic is no civilization at all. It offers no hope and no adventure, no challenge worthy of sacrifice and joy to its youth and artists. It offers no festivity, no Sabbath, no ritual to its people. And no deep healing.”

Mathew Fox, the Coming of the Cosmic Christ

Connecting heart

may my heart always be open to little birds
who are the secrets of living
whatever they sing is better than to know
and if men should not hear them, men are old

may my mind stroll about hungry
and  fearless and thirsty and supple
and even if It’s  Sunday, may I be wrong
for whenever men are right, they are not young

and may myself do nothing usefully
and love yourself so more than truly
there’s never been quite such a fool who could fail
pulling all the sky over him with one smile.
